The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point, is a highly selective undergraduate-only institution located in the Hudson Valley about 50 miles north of New York City. West Point is funded by the federal government, and it exists to provide leaders of character for the U.S. Army. West Point is the Forbes magazine Best College in the United States for 2009. More information is available at http://www.usma.edu. The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of thirteen academic departments responsible for the academic program at USMA. Our students, called "cadets", are taught four semesters (16 credit hours) of core mathematics. Coverage includes differential and integral single and multi-variable calculus, mathematical modeling, and (calculus based) probability and statistics. Additional mathematics coursework is required for engineering and other technical majors. All courses are taught in small sections of at most 18 cadets. The Department offers a mathematics major, an operations research major, and a statistics minor. More information about the Department is available at http://www.westpoint.edu/math/SitePages/Home.aspx.
