• Full time fixed term for 18 months. Located at the School of Mathematics and Statistics • Opportunity to develop new mathematical models for atherosclerotic plaques • Base Salary Level A $98,645 to 105,305 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

We seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate – Mathematical Biology to work on the project, “New mathematics for lipids and cells: structured models for atherosclerosis” funded by the Australian Research Council. The project aims to create new mathematical theory for immune cell behaviour which leads to heart attacks and strokes. This includes formulation and solution of new types of mathematical models for atherosclerotic plaque development, leading to the creation of new mathematical tools to investigate cell fate in plaques.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Mary Myerscough on the formulation and numerical solution of partial integro-differential equation models for the development of atherosclerotic plaques, which include structured population of macrophages and other immune cells.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• do research in the School of Mathematics and Statistics under the supervision of Prof Mary Myerscough • participate in research group meetings and other activities • formulate and refine mathematical models for immune cell populations using structured population frameworks • solve the resulting sets of partial differential equations computationally and interpret results • communicate the outcomes of this work by writing papers and making presentations.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate – Mathematical Biology who has:

• a PhD (or near completion) in mathematics or a cognate area • relevant expertise in mathematical biology and numerical solutions of partial differential equations • demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision • the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals • a strong track record of publishing your research • a demonstrated ability to complete work in timely fashion and to write up results for publication.

To keep our community safe, please be aware of our COVID safety precautions which form our conditions of entry for all staff, students and visitors coming to campus.

Pre-employment checks

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment. EEO statement
