Research Associate in Mathematics

Pure Mathematics Section, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences

Location: South Kensington Campus, London

Salary Range: £40,858- £48,340 per annum

Job summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and will involve the study of derived categories of smooth representations of p-adic reductive groups.

The project aims to study the relationship between derived categories of smooth representations of a p-adic group G and categories of coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of Langlands parameters, as well as potential applications of this relationship in arithmetic.

Duties and responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include: • To work in close co-operation with the principal investigator and collaborators on the project • To take initiatives in the planning and execution of research • To direct the work of small research teams including undergraduate and postgraduate students

Essential requirements

The essential requirements for this post are as follow: ● Hold a PhD in Mathematics (or equivalent) ● Experience in the representation theory of p-adic groups or closely related fields ● Original research results in representation theory of p-adic groups or related topics in geometric representation theory, commensurate with career stage ● A broad and strong background in representation theory, with emphasis on connections to the Langlands program ● Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers ● Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and method ● Ability to keep accurate records of research results and activity

Further Information

The position is fixed term for 24 months. The expected start date is between 1 July 2021 and 1 October 2021. Maximum salary on appointment: £42,609 per annum.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the Level A salary range, £36,045- £39,183 per annum.
