Job Title: Research Associate in Mathematics

Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics Section, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences

Salary: £40,858 - £40,858 per annum

Location: South Kensington Campus

Job Summary

The position is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and will involve analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PDE) emerging in mathematical fluid mechanics and kinetic theory.

Duties and Responsibilities

The project is devoted to analysis of the nonlocal hydrodynamic models of interacting agents. The goal is to develop th existence and stability theory for degenerate fluid equations (Navier-Stokes, Euler) with nonlocal interaction forces using a mix of techniques such as: theory of Sobolev spaces, harmonic analysis, stochastic analysis, measure theory, theory of linear and quasi-linear parabolic and hyperbolic conservation laws.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience in analysis of PDEs or closely related fields.

Essential Requirements

The essential requirements for this post are as follow:

• Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD in Mathematics or equivalent level of professional qualification • Research Associate: Hold a PhD in Mathematics or equivalent level of professional qualification • Experience in analysis of PDEs or closely related fields • Original research results in analysis of PDEs, functional analysis, measure theory or numerical analysis, commensurate with career stage • A strong background in fluid mechanics and/or kinetic theory • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and method • Ability to keep accurate records of research results and activity

Further Information

The position is full-time and fixed term for 24 months and will be based at South Kensington Campus. The expected start date is 1 September 2021 or soon thereafter. *Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant with a salary of £36,045- £39,183 per annum.
