The Biomathematics Group within the Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics Section in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College is seeking applications for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position, starting on 1 January 2022 or at a date thereafter to be arranged.

The Department of Mathematics consistently ranks as one of the best Mathematics Departments in the UK, and is composed of four sections: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics and Finance. Duties and responsibilities

You will work in the field of biomathematics and will undertake a self-directed program of research and scholarship at a level commensurate with the current standards of excellence in the Department of Mathematics and Imperial College. The role will involve lecturing undergraduate and post-graduate courses, supervising research and PhD students, developing their own research group, and managing staff, such as postdoctoral Research Associates. The successful candidate will promote the reputation of the Group, the Section, the Department, and the College through scientific activities and other scholarly activities.

The research programme of the successful candidate will be in the field of Biomathematics broadly interpreted, with no restrictions on the areas of interest and expertise but with a clear focus on research that impacts biological and medical science. Areas of current interest in the Biomathematics Group include: mathematical and biophysical modelling of processes in cellular and molecular biology; methods and models for single-cell data analysis; applications of networks and graph theory in biology, medicine and social science; stochastic processes in biology and medicine; mathematics for data science and precision healthcare; methodological frameworks based on dynamical systems, statistical inference, and machine learning; computational social science; and computational and mathematical biology. The Biomathematics Group combines a broad range of mathematical techniques with in-depth interactions with biomedical data and experiments. The Group is a key actor in various cross-College Centres and initiatives spanning disciplines from biology and medicine to engineering, computer science and business. In addition to PhD supervision within the Department of Mathematics, the Biomathematics Group is also a central participant in several Centres for Doctoral Training involving academics from diverse Departments. The Biomathematics Group is strongly and actively committed to a diverse research and working environment.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mathematical Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline

• Research interests in an area of Biomathematics, broadly interpreted

• An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications commensurate with career stage

• The ability to interact effectively with the broad range of research expertise in the Department of Mathematics, bringing together mathematical links to develop their research programme

• A strong record of working across disciplines and taking the initiative in formulating and developing mathematics cross-disciplinary collaborations with biomedical scientists leading to publications in venues read by significant numbers of biological or medical scientists
