The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge invites applications for the position of Post-Doctoral Research Associate funded by an ERSRS/STFC grant to work on investigating new quantum algorithms for problems in quantum field theories with future applications to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).

You will work with Dr Sergii Strelchuk who is a Royal Society University Research Fellow, DAMTP at the Centre for Quantum Information and Foundations (CQIF), University of Cambridge and you will also collaborate with Dr Bipasha Chakraborty from the Southampton High Energy Physics Group.

The first part of the project aims to study the structure of computational problems that arise in the context of lattice QCD and their potential for quantum speedups. The second part of the project will investigate bespoke quantum simulation techniques for quantum field theories with an aim to extend them to QCD.

This is a collaborative project between CQIF at the University of Cambridge and Southampton High Energy Physics Group. Relevant research interests of the CQIF group include quantum algorithms, quantum computing and simulation of quantum systems. The other research interests of the Southampton High Energy Physics group include: lattice QCD, physics beyond the standard model, particle physics and cosmology, neutrino physics, b-quark and kaon phenomenology, exact renormalization group, extra-dimensional models of the weak interactions, weak interaction corrections at high energies, twistor methods, holography, strings and branes, and high density QCD.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.

Applicants will have, or be soon to complete, a PhD (or equivalent professional qualification and experience) in mathematics/theoretical physics/computer science/computational science, and experience in quantum field theories and/or high energy physics. They will also have a good understanding of quantum algorithms and an interest in learning and applying new quantum algorithmic techniques. Experience in lattice QCD computations or numerical simulations of quantum field theories is desired. You will contribute to the ongoing projects in quantum computation and develop new ones, disseminate results via publications and conference talks, and actively participate in the academic life of the group, which also includes assisting PhD students.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 20 months in the first instance.

Informal inquiries can be made by contacting Dr Sergii Strelchuk ss870@cam.ac.uk or LE33562@maths.cam.ac.uk

You will need to upload full curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a description of your recent and future research projects (not to exceed three pages). The contact details of two academic referees will be required; please ensure that your referees are aware that they will be contacted by the Mathematics HR Office Administrator to request that they upload a reference for you to our Web Recruitment System; and please encourage them to do so promptly.

Please quote reference LE33562 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.
