Position overview

The Australian National University's Mathematical Sciences Institute invites applications from outstanding researchers who are interested in the study of mathematical aspects of Data Science, and in the way a better understanding of such questions can be implemented in real-world algorithms.

The Fellowships are part of a collaboration between Professor Peter Bartlett, Head of Google Research Australia, and MSI's Mathematical Foundations of Data Science group, led by Professor Shahar Mendelson.

The fellowships are fixed-term positions for up to five years, and at academic levels B and/or Level C (roughly the equivalent of Assistant/Associate Professor in the US system). In exceptional cases, the fixed-term positions may be converted to ongoing (tenured) positions.

Successful candidates will be able to devote their time to research activities, with a minimal (graduate level) teaching and administrative load. The standard ANU salary package is Level B $103,841 – $117,736 per annum plus 17% superannuation, and Level C $124,685 - $138,583 per annum plus 17% superannuation.

The ANU would accommodate successful applicants who would like to reduce their employment percentage and work for our industry partner at a fractional appointment. For information on applications for fractional appointments with Google Research Australia please contact Professor Peter Bartlett (peterbartlett@google.com).

The University actively encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For more information on employment opportunities, contact our Indigenous Employment Consultant on indigenous.employment@anu.edu.au

ANU values diversity and inclusion and is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to those of all backgrounds and identities. For more information about staff equity at ANU, visit https://services.anu.edu.au/human-resources/respect-inclusion
