The Department of Mathematics in the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, in co-operation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), invites applications for 2 scholarships for non-German doctoral candidates (EUR 1,200 monthly stipend) starting between 1st of May and 1st of October 2022. Funds are provided by the DAAD for a period of three years. In addition to the scholarship, the funding line includes a fixed sum for travel expenses, health, accident and liability insurance as well as a contribution towards research expenses.

The PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences focuses on high-level research in mathematics. It features intensive training and cutting-edge research projects in pure and applied mathematics, emphasising independent research on the part of the students. A list of research areas is available here: List of research areas

Applicants are required to include in their letter of motivation the area of research where they would like to pursue their doctoral studies. Applications in pure mathematics are particularly welcome.

As part of its structured doctoral programme, the Department of Mathematics provides training in the core competences of research methods, content-related expertise and interdisciplinary research skills; furthermore, it places the emphasis on competences which give its doctoral candidates a competitive edge across research areas and occupational fields as well as those that enhance their ability to assume executive functions.

Eligibility criteria

The PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences is designed as a structured academic programme for graduates whose academic profile and outstanding interdisciplinary research proposals set them apart from the rest. Consequently selection is based solely on the applicants' qualification.

The successful candidates are expected to hold an excellent master's degree that formally qualifies them for doctoral studies. In their previous studies, candidates are expected to have acquired relevant discipline-specific and methodological knowledge in their field of expertise that enables them to successfully complete their research project. Beyond the formal qualifications, seeing a research project through from beginning to end requires a great deal of dedication, the ability to deal with conflicts, self-management skills, the ability to think and act strategically, self-motivation, well-developed communication skills and the ability to work together with others.

The University of Göttingen wishes to increase the proportion of its female staff and, by maintaining a family-friendly working environment with flexible working hours, improve the family life and career balance. The University of Göttingen expressly encourages women as well as candidates with children to apply. Moreover, these posts are suitable for candidates with disabilities, who will be given preference, if their personal aptitudes and qualifications are otherwise equal.
