The Department of Mathematics at the University of St. Thomas invites applications for open rank tenure-track or tenure-eligible positions in Actuarial Science, to begin in September 2022. Applicants must have or be near completion of a Ph.D. (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or in a closely related field. The department particularly encourages applications from candidates currently transitioning to actuarial research, professional exam/module completion, or actuarial science course development. ABDs nearing completion of the Ph.D. will be considered, with the initial appointment to be made at the rank of instructor. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and show strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities in actuarial science, risk management, financial mathematics, or a closely related field. The Actuarial Science Program is one of just 17 universities in the United States recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The University strongly prefers candidates who can contribute to the CAE requirements of this designation and leverage the unique industry ties the program enjoys to provide a singular experience for our students.

The University of St. Thomas is a liberal arts institution that values excellence in teaching and research. The 20-member Department of Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/mathematics) offers bachelor's programs in mathematics, mathematics education, and actuarial science, and supports the interdepartmental degree program in statistics and is quite active in undergraduate research. The Actuarial Science Program (http://www.stthomas.edu/actuarialscience) offers a Bachelor of Science degree and is in the Department of Mathematics. The Center for Applied Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/cam) is located within the department and supports faculty and student research on a variety of projects.

The University of St. Thomas embraces diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Our convictions of dignity, diversity and personal attention call us to embody and champion a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.  We welcome applicants of diverse races, ethnicities, geographic origins, gender identities, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, work experience, physical and intellectual abilities, and financial means. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. This commitment is consistent with our university mission: Inspired by Catholic intellectual tradition the University of St. Thomas educates students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good. A successful candidate will possess a commitment to the ideals of this mission. The Department of Mathematics is in full support of these ideals and strives to create a department that embodies them.

The successful candidate is expected to teach primarily undergraduate actuarial science, statistics, or mathematics courses housed in the Department of Mathematics. The standard teaching load for this position is three courses per semester with a maximum of two distinct preparations per semester; however, candidates who exhibit (or demonstrate strong potential for) an established research agenda in actuarial science might be eligible for release time in support of their scholarly work. In addition, the Faculty Development Center at the University of St. Thomas maintains a competitive research support program that can provide faculty members up to two course releases during their first five years on campus with support programs for tenured faculty available as well.

Enrollment in actuarial science and upper-level statistics classes is commonly about 15-22 students and lower-level mathematics courses are capped at 28 to 30 students.

The program values credentialing from a professional organization and has a support system in place to assist faculty in obtaining an associate credential. A candidate at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor may be considered for the position of Director of the Actuarial Science Program. The director teaches a reduced course load and manages a budget of discretionary funds.

In addition to tenure-track positions, the department is also searching for clinical faculty for the actuarial science program. We encourage candidates to read that position description to see which is the most appropriate fit for applying.

To be considered for this opportunity, all interested applicants must apply online at https://www.stthomas.edu/jobs/. There are multiple parts to the application process. Applicants will first be asked to create an applicant profile and upload their supplemental application materials. The committee will begin reviewing applications on Oct. 1, 2021 and will continue reviewing applications until the positions are filled.

The application process will include:

1) A curriculum vitae uploaded into you profile.
2) A cover letter copy/pasted into your application.
3) Please complete the reference section of the application with the names and contact information of three professional references. Candidates will be contacted if letters of recommendation are desired. At least one of the references should be able to address the candidate’s teaching.
4) Upload the following documents (limit each to two pages):
 a. A statement detailing your teaching experience and your teaching philosophy.
 b. A statement (in a language understandable to a broad range of math, stat. and actuarial faculty) outlining your current and future research and indicating how your research agenda will enhance our current efforts.
 c. A statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
5) Optional: additional evidence of teaching excellence.

The preferred format for all uploaded application documents is PDF.
