The Department of Mathematics at the University of St. Thomas invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Mathematics, to begin in September 2022. Applicants must have or be near completion of a Ph.D. in mathematics or in a closely related field. ABDs nearing completion of the Ph.D. will be considered, with the initial appointment to be made at the rank of instructor. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and show strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities.

The University of St. Thomas is a liberal arts institution that values excellence in teaching and research. The 20-member Department of Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/mathematics) offers bachelor's programs in mathematics, mathematics education, and actuarial science, and supports the interdepartmental degree program in statistics and is quite active in undergraduate research. The Actuarial Science Program (http://www.stthomas.edu/actuarialscience) offers a Bachelor of Science degree and is in the Department of Mathematics. The Center for Applied Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/cam) is located within the department and supports faculty and student research on a variety of projects.

The University of St. Thomas embraces diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Our convictions of dignity, diversity and personal attention call us to embody and champion a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.  We welcome applicants of diverse races, ethnicities, geographic origins, gender identities, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, work experience, physical and intellectual abilities, and financial means. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. This commitment is consistent with our university mission: Inspired by Catholic intellectual tradition the University of St. Thomas educates students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good. A successful candidate will possess a commitment to the ideals of this mission. The Department of Mathematics is in full support of these ideals and strives to create a department that embodies them.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate mathematics, actuarial science, or statistics courses housed in the Department of Mathematics. The standard teaching load for this position is three courses per semester, usually with two distinct preparations per semester. The Faculty Development Center at the University of St. Thomas maintains a competitive research support program that can provide faculty members up to two course releases during their first five years on campus with support programs for tenured faculty available as well.

In addition to providing more full-time faculty for students in lower-level courses, the department needs a faculty member who can teach mid- and upper-level undergraduate mathematics courses. Ideally the new faculty member could teach at least two courses that are in the major core (algebra, analysis, complex analysis, or topology). Alternatively, there is a need for a faculty member who could teach Math 313 Probability and provide options for faculty who teach courses in the Mathematical Statistics track of the Statistics major.

To be considered for this opportunity, all interested applicants must apply online at https://www.stthomas.edu/jobs/. There are multiple parts to the application process. Applicants will first be asked to create an applicant profile and upload their supplemental application materials. The committee will begin reviewing applications on Nov. 15, 2021 and will continue reviewing applications until the position is filled.

A statement (in a language understandable to a broad range of math, stat. and actuarial faculty) outlining your current and future research and indicating how your research agenda will enhance our current efforts. c. A statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

5) Optional: additional evidence of teaching excellence.

The preferred format for all uploaded application documents is PDF. Any questions regarding the position should be sent to the search committee chair Magda Stolarska at mastolarska@stthomas.edu or department chair Arkady Shemyakin at a9shemyakin@stthomas.edu .

In light of its commitment to create and maintain a safe learning and working environment, employment with the University of St. Thomas requires consent and successful completion of a background screening.
