University of Glasgow College of Science & Engineering School of Mathematics & Statistics

Rankin-Sneddon Research Fellowship in Mathematics Vacancy Reference: 073828 Salary: Grade, 7, £36,382-£40,927 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) for three years from the date of appointment.

The University of Glasgow, established in 1451, is a member of the UK's Russell Group of leading universities. The University is committed to enhancing its position as one of the world's great broad-based research-intensive universities.

It is the University of Glasgow’s mission to foster an inclusive climate, which ensures equality in our working, learning, research and teaching environment. We strongly endorse the principles of Athena SWAN, including a supportive and flexible working environment, with commitment from all levels of the organisation in promoting gender equality. The University of Glasgow invites applications for a 3-year Rankin-Sneddon Research Fellowship in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The candidate will undertake independent research in a field of applied mathematics (broadly construed and including integrable systems and mathematical physics), that complements or reinforces the existing research strengths within the School.

While primarily a research position, this fellowship will carry a light teaching load, which will normally mean lecturing one 20-credit course, or two 10-credit courses, with associated tutorials, each academic year. This will typically translate into approximately 4 contact hours per week in each of two 11-week semesters per year, the distribution of which may be flexible. Research fellows will also have the opportunity to supervise Honours and/or Masters Projects in their area of interest.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics is the home of the mathematical sciences within the University of Glasgow. It is one of the six Schools which constitute the College of Science and Engineering, which in turn is one of the four Colleges within the University. The School is large, growing and diverse. It offers full undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes at all levels and it undertakes research of high international standard. We have research groups of international excellence in all three of the main areas of the subject, traditionally described as pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics, although we increasingly have research activity which blurs these descriptions. The School has over 70 academic staff across pure and applied mathematics, and statistics, together with over 100 PhD students, 25 research assistants and 20 student support, administrative, secretarial and IT staff. We currently have 6 Rankin-Sneddon Research Fellows, in addition to various externally funded fellowship positions.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr. Brendan Owens: brendan.owens@glasgow.ac.uk .

All interviews and presentations will be held over Zoom in late January/early February 2022.
