Job Description

School of Mathematics

Lectureship/Readership in Analysis

Lectureship in Analysis: Grade UE08 £42,149 - £50,296 per annum

Readership in Analysis Grade UE09 £53,348 - £60,022 per annum

Full time (35 hours per week), open ended

The School of Mathematics is seeking to appoint to a lectureship in Analysis (equivalent to Assistant Professor) to start on 1 August 2022 or later by agreement. Very strong and experienced applicants may be appointed to a Readership (equivalent to Associate Professor).

We are seeking candidates with a track record of high-quality research in pure analysis. We encourage applications from candidates who wish to pursue interdisciplinary research between different areas of analysis, or more broadly with links to other mathematical (or non-mathematical) fields. As well as carrying out high quality research, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching and further development of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses and programmes.

The Analysis Group within the School works in a wide range of areas of mathematical analysis, including Linear and Nonlinear PDEs of a variety of flavours (Elliptic, Hyperbolic, Parabolic, Dispersive and Stochastic), Harmonic Analysis, Free Boundaries and General Relativity. We are looking for first class, independent researchers to enhance or complement those strengths. The role will also include the supervision of PhD students, involvement in the assessment of students, helping to develop courses, and teaching-related administration. The School takes career development seriously, and will provide appropriately tailored mentoring in both research and teaching.

A PhD in Mathematics and some experience of teaching pure mathematics at University level is essential, as well as being able to demonstrate independence, effective team working, good communication and interpersonal skills.

We welcome applications from all prospective candidates that meet the person specification. As women and members of ethnic minorities are currently under-represented in posts at this level, we particularly encourage applications from members of these groups.

You can apply online using the link at the bottom of this page.  Please ensure that your online application includes an up-to-date CV, research statement and teaching statement, and in addition that three references are sent to references@maths.ed.ac.uk by the closing date quoting Job Req 2519.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Iain Gordon (Head of School) via hosmaths@ed.ac.uk

About Us
As a world-leading research-intensive University, we are here to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.

About the Team
The School of Mathematics is one of the world’s leading mathematical sciences departments, home to internationally excellent researchers and to an innovative educational environment for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Our location in the beautiful and historic capital of Scotland puts us in the centre of a vibrant community of academics, cultural institutions, industry partners and research institutes.

As a School we value both the breadth and depth of our mathematical research. We have over seventy permanent members of academic staff and over twenty research fellows and research associates, who come from across the world and together cover a broad range of research topics in pure and applied mathematics, operational research and statistics. Our Graduate School has over eighty research students and over one hundred MSc students, and our postgraduate provision has gone from strength to strength with the recent introduction of Doctoral Training Centres in Analysis and its Applications, and in Data Science. We have close links with the School of Informatics and are actively involved in current data science developments, particularly as one of the 5 UK-wide partners in the Alan Turing Institute.

The School is passionate about delivering a world-leading educational environment for its students and is constantly exploring new ideas in mathematical education in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. Quantitative skills have never been more in demand in the world, and our students graduate with strong skills in critical thinking, independent learning and communication. Within 6 months of graduating, 93% of our students are in full-time employment or study. In 2010 the Teaching Programme review "welcomed the excellent quality of education" provided by the School.

The School of Mathematics holds a Bronze Athena SWAN award in recognition of our commitment to advancing the representation of women in mathematics. Further information about the School, our research and our teaching is available at http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk
