University of Warwick

Department of Statistics

Professor and Head of Department

Competitive Salary Ref: 100252-078

Permanent position

The Department of Statistics at Warwick seeks a new head to continue to develop and advance the quality of its education and research. The successful candidate will be appointed as a professor on an indefinite basis and will have a strong research and leadership profile. The appointment as Head of Department will be for three years in the first instance, with an option to extend.

The Department of Statistics is one of the most successful departments in the University of Warwick. Its research spans a broad range of areas in theoretical and applied probability, finance, statistical methodology, computational statistics and interdisciplinary collaborations. Its teaching programmes attract exceptional students at all levels. It comprises around 600 undergraduate students on degree courses in MORSE, MathStat and Data Science, 90 postgraduate students on the MSc Statistics, MSc Financial Mathematics and PhD degree streams, 60 academic staff, and 9 support staff. Major strategic initiatives in recent years include the establishment of the Centre for Research in Statistical Methodology (CRiSM) as a catalyst for its statistical research, the Applied Statistics & Risk Unit (AS&RU) which promotes and coordinates external partnerships, and the Academy for PhD Training in Statistics (APTS) -- a collaboration between UK statistics groups to provide a nationwide PhD training programme. The department has close relations with the co-located Mathematics Institute and other departments within the Faculty of Science, and is strongly engaged with the Alan Turing Institute. In 2018, a £27M extension to the Zeeman building will be opened to promote further interdisciplinary collaboration between Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. The department holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award, and recent surveys of satisfaction among students and staff reveal a happy and productive department that prospers in an excellent working environment. Warwick Statistics (jointly with Mathematics) was ranked 3rd in the UK in REF 2014 with more than 90% of research work assessed as either internationally excellent or world leading. The research environment at Warwick is rated as the very best in the UK for mathematical sciences (100% at 4*). In 2015 Warwick was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education for its research in Mathematics and Statistics and the impact and application of that research to solve global challenges. The University of Warwick is a top-100 global research university in which substantially devolved departments thrive. The University promotes collaboration and partnerships, both academic and industrial, across disciplines and continents. Warwick is one of the founding partners of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s new national institute for Data Science and AI. This has enabled the strong engagement that the Statistics department has established within the Institute. Warwick’s success has been built on exceptional academic standards, combining creativity and intellectual rigour with agility, professionalism and sustainability. It aims to provide its students with a life-changing education, an outstanding student experience and a global perspective as citizens of the future.

The next Head will work with this large and diverse community of academics and students, and support collaboration with the wider University. They will represent the Department to public and private audiences, nationally and internationally, and develop networks to promote the work of the Department.
