Research Associate in Mathematical Physics

Job Number: ACAD105074 Contract Type: Open Ended Closing Date: 14 Apr 2021 Faculty/Division: Faculty of Science Salary: £33,797 - £33,797

The role The University of Bristol seeks outstanding candidates for a Research Associate in Mathematical Physics, position tenable from 01 August 2021 or a date to be agreed, for a duration of maximum 2 years. The successful candidate will become a member of the Institute for Mathematical Physics within the School of Mathematics in Bristol and will work with Dr Thomas Bothner.

What will you be doing? This post is funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council Project Grant “Limit shapes for square ice and tails of the KPZ equation”: This project is pointing at two fundamental problems in the theory of highly correlated systems, namely (a) the exact description of limit shapes in the domain wall six-vertex model in its different phase regions; and (b) the derivation of tail expansions and large deviation principles for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The central goal is to discover a problem specific Riemann-Hilbert approach for both questions and resolve them through the development of novel nonlinear steepest descent techniques in combination with original ideas and techniques coming from Random Matrix Theory and Integrable Systems.

You should apply if This job requires the expertise of a PhD graduate in Mathematical Physics, Random Matrix or Integrable Systems theory in order to conduct research in projects on the scaling analysis of correlation and distribution functions of exactly solvable lattice models in statistical physics and in the field of integrable probability. The successful candidate will be lined managed by Dr Thomas Bothner, but also benefit from interacting with the members of the Institute for Mathematical Physics

If you would like to apply, please submit your CV (including publication list). cover letter and a research statement.
