The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Georgetown University announces a search for the position of Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in Mathematics and Statistics. The DGS is a full time administrative position with responsibility for managing the MS degree program in mathematics and statistics at Georgetown. The DGS is expected to teach up to one graduate course per semester, and has final responsibility for all operations involving the graduate program. The DGS has responsibilities that include but are not limited to: recruiting, admissions, curriculum development, scheduling of courses, academic and career advising, and connection to the professional mathematical sciences community of users

There is a graduate program executive committee, chaired by the DGS, which advises the DGS and the Department Chair. The DGS reports to the Chair and works with the university administration to ensure compliance with policies.

The MS degree program in mathematics and statistics at Georgetown is a flourishing and stable enterprise in its twelfth year, with a student body of roughly 100 and having matriculated almost 450 students since its beginning in 2006. It is primarily a professional master’s degree whose curriculum is informed by contemporary workforce technologies and skills. The curriculum consists of a blend of core and elective courses that combine the twin disciplines of applied mathematics and statistics along with coding in modern programming languages. The DGS will need to stay abreast of modern developments in the math/stat sciences and to bring them into the curriculum as appropriate. There is one full-time assistant that handles many of the administrative and clerical duties who jointly reports to the DGS and Chair.

The goal is to fill the position with the intent of a long-term commitment. There is an initiative at Georgetown to start a PhD program in mathematical sciences, housed within the Math/Stat Department, and the DGS is expected to play a prominent role in this effort.

Requirements & Qualifications: Doctorate degree in mathematical sciences. Ten years in the discipline to be abreast of classical and contemporary developments in the mathematical sciences. Good interpersonal skills for dealing with students, instructors, administration and workforce leadership. Solid teacher with broad knowledge of coding languages and skills. Possess broad range of knowledge and skills associated with contemporary mathematical and statistical modeling, analysis and computation. Work well with others but possess self-confidence to be comfortable in hiring and firing of staff, instructors and teaching assistants. Must be able to help instructors improve teaching skills.
