This is an announcement for two postdoctoral positions at the University of Hamburg, Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Mathematics, Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe

Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L

Start date for first position 01.04.2022 or later, fixed for a period of two years, for second position 01.10.2022, fixed until 30.09.2025 (fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Scope of work: full-time position suitable for part-time

Responsibilities: Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties: The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY.

For the first position: This postdoc position is intended to pursue research on categorification in the context of quantum topology and on applications of low-dimensional categories, for example towards link homology and topological quantum field theories. The project is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematicians and physicists aiming to explore new concepts and observables for quantum fields. Active participation in this collaboration is expected.

For the second position: The candidate will conduct research in Mathematics related to structures appearing in quantum field theories with observables of all dimensions, such as tensor categories, topological field theories, factorisation algebras, and higher structures in general. The candidate will participate in and contribute to the interdisciplinary activities in the Quantum Universe cluster.

Postdoctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe Research School (QURS), which provides academic and soft skills training, as well as career planning support. In addition, they will receive individual budgets to facilitate the attendance of summer schools and conferences, and to support other educational measures. Additional travel money for project-specific duties will be provided by the hosting research groups. Postdoctoral research associates may participate in the supervision of doctoral students, teaching at the University, and in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.

In particular, there is the possibility to take part in the common teaching duties of the group.

Requirements: A university degree in a relevant field. Research experience equivalent to a PhD.

First position: Experience in at least one of the research fields relevant for this project, such as representation theory, low-dimensional topology, or higher categories.

Second position: Research experience in an area of Mathematics related to higher and extended structures in quantum field theory, such as tensor categories, topological field theories, factorisation algebras, or more general higher structures.
