Assistant Professor of Mathematics
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Summary:
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado Mesa University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied Mathematics or Mathematics. Colorado Mesa University is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution with a B.S. program in Mathematics with separate concentrations in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Secondary Education, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.
For this position, we seek a highly motivated, teaching-centered colleague who will actively engage with students. It is preferred that applicants have an academic background in applied mathematics. Applicants should demonstrate effective pedagogical strategies in the classroom and have the ability to teach undergraduate introductory mathematics courses as well as upper division courses in applied mathematics or mathematics. Our current course offerings include such topics as ordinary and partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, numerical methods, and financial mathematics, as well as topology, complex analysis, and others.
The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester; courses may be assigned as in-person, online, hybrid, or via distance delivery modalities. Scholarship in ??the discipline, involvement with advising, and service to the department and profession are expected.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Teach lower-division and upper-division undergraduate mathematics courses.
- Engage in scholarly activity.
- Serve as a mentor for undergraduate student research projects and activities.
- Provide student academic advising and evaluation.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Engage in service to the department, university, and profession.
- Perform other program and department-level duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
- Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or Ph.D. in Mathematics. Degree should be completed by August 2025; candidates who will complete their degree after August 2025 may be considered.
- Experience teaching undergraduate mathematics courses.
- Interest and ability to teach lower-division service courses such as College Algebra, mathematics courses for liberal arts majors, or introductory statistics.
- Demonstrated commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An academic background in applied mathematics, as demonstrated by dissertation topic, current scholarly activities, and/or recent teaching experience is preferred.
- Experience teaching both ??highly-coordinated courses and non-coordinated courses at the undergraduate level and experience creating assessments (e.g. exams, projects, etc.) are desirable.
- Preference will be given to candidates with excellent communication skills, a record of outstanding teaching of undergraduate mathematics, and the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses.
- Evidence of dedication to scholarship, particularly in the mentoring of undergraduate projects, and a demonstrated commitment to service activities will help to further distinguish the applicant.
