Position Description
Call for Expressions of Interest and Nominations
for a Max Planck Director (m/f/d) in the field of Biological AI
for a Max Planck Director (m/f/d) in the field of Biological AI
The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden, Germany, is seeking an outstanding individual to fill the position of Max Planck Director, supported by a collaboration with the Boehringer-Ingelheim Foundation and the Dresden University of Technology. Max Planck Directors enjoy full scientific freedom, exceptional long-term funding, outstanding infrastructure and a high level of administrative support.
The successful candidate will lead novel and innovative research in the broader field of Biological Artificial Intelligence. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: AI methods that meet the complexity of living systems, high-dimensional machine learning for biology, AI-driven laboratory automation, physics- and biology-inspired machine learning. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong research profile in these or related areas in the field of artificial intelligence.
The MPI-CBG is a pioneering research institute focused on fundamental questions in cell, developmental, and systems biology. We are interested in how the morphology of cells and tissues emerges from the interactions between individual molecules and cells. The MPI-CBG shares a research faculty with the Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD), integrating expertise in biological physics, mathematics, and computer science. Together, we combine experiments with theory in a collaborative research environment. A hallmark of the Institute is its multi-scale approach to complexity, bridging molecular to organismal levels and integrating emergent properties across scales.
Expressions of interest and nominations of candidates should be addressed to Stephan Grill, Managing Director, MPI-CBG, Pfotenhauer Str. 108, 01307 Dresden, Germany, (bioAI-search@mpi-cbg.de) by August 15, 2025. Documents should include a Curriculum Vitae that contains a publication list, together with a brief outline of potential future research for an expression of interest, or a brief summary of past scientific successes for a nomination (each up to one page).
The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science is an independent, non-profit research organization that primarily promotes and supports basic research. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment. The Max Planck Society is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women among its scientific leadership, particularly at the director level. We strongly encourage expressions of interest from and nominations of qualified female scientists.
