Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New Mexico seeks a postdoctoral fellow with research experience in mathematical biology, preferably using theoretical and numerical approaches to understand mechanisms in biological systems. This appointment may be renewed for additional periods after one year as long as grant funding is available.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Anna Nelson and will be able to continue their current research projects while also engaging in collaborative work with neuroscientists and neurobiologists. You will also be working with scientists from other STEM departments at UNM, with mentorship guidance on cross-discipline collaboration. Your office space will be at UNM, where you will also have time to pursue your own research interests related to mathematical biology.

This position has no teaching responsibilities, but there is an opportunity to teach if desired. The preferred starting date is in August 2025. Required Qualifications

A PhD in mathematics, computer science, biomedical engineering or a related field by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience using Python or MATLAB. Experience in work related to mechanistic mathematical modeling and analyzing their behavior (including computationally). Experience in modeling topics related to neuroscience or neurobiology. Experiencing in interpreting results in biological terms, and communicating with applied mathematicians and other quantitative and life scientists. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
