Position Description

The Instructional Support Specialist will be part of the leadership team that is committed to providing excellence in mathematics instruction at Purdue University in Indianapolis.  The specialist will work closely with the Mathematics faculty and lecturers and with students and will provide a wide range of academic, instructional, operational, and administrative support to the Department of Mathematics in Indianapolis. This is a 12-month position and includes teaching.

(Student-centered)

Provide student academic, instructional and operational support services for course delivery and student success in Indianapolis at a level equivalent to West Lafayette.   

Coordinate academic support resources for mathematics courses, such as Mathematics Resource Room Indianapolis, Supplemental Instruction, CoSINE, etc. Ensures tutors are in place, assigned to courses and have necessary resources and tools. Train tutors as necessary.

Set instructional standards for the classroom, TAs and tutors.

Partner Purdue Academic Success Center in Indianapolis to assist with their Mathematics support efforts. Ensure resources are available and support is in line with instructional standards.

Work with admissions and advising offices to ensure accurate mathematics course placement, especially with incoming students.

Advise/mentor students, especially those who may need extra resources due to strong or weak past performance: check for accurate mathematics course placement in the first two weeks of the semester and after the first exam.

Oversee coordinated exams in Indianapolis, including evening exams.  This includes scheduling and ensuring exam integrity.

Schedule and arrange proctoring for alternate/make-up exams.

Help train and mentor Teaching Assistants to ensure quality recitation instruction.

Promote to undergraduates the academic resources inside and outside the classroom.

(Instruction-centered) 

Work with faculty to develop and deliver classroom, project, and laboratory-based instruction. 

Ensure that our new faculty hires have the teaching support they need, especially for coordinated courses such as MA 16500 Calculus I, MA 16600 Calculus II, MA 26100 Multivariate Calculus, MA 262 Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, MA 26500 Linear Algebra, MA 26600 Ordinary Differential Equations, and MA 30300 Differential Equations and Partial Differential Equations for Engineering and the Sciences.

Work with faculty at both the West Lafayette and Indianapolis locations to ensure pedagogical consistency in coordinated courses.

Teach one course per semester, such as MA 15800 Precalculus – Functions and Trigonometry, MA 16010 Applied Calculus I or MA 16020 Applied Calculus II, to observe first-hand the instruction delivery and the needs of the instructors and the students.  Teaching in the summer could be in Early Start.

Participate in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards for instruction delivery.


Pro Provide curriculum support for current and future mathematics courses and oversee implementation of a Mathematics minor (and future Mathematics major) in Indianapolis.
