The School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota invites applications for two post-doctoral positions in computational science and mathematics under the supervision of Douglas Arnold. The position is supported by the Simons Collaboration on Localization of Waves (wave.umn.edu), founded in 2018 and recently renewed through 2025. This international and interdisciplinary collaboration focuses on the behavior of waves traveling in disordered media and particularly the fascinating behavior known as localization. Our advances in understanding of localization are already having impact in condensed matter physics and semiconductor engineering and other fields, and there are a wealth of challenging problems going forward. Computational simulations are a major enabling tool in this work, and the post-doctoral positions are to advance the collaboration through the design, implementation, visualization, and analysis of state-of-the-art numerical methods for solving large scale systems of partial differential equations and exploring their spectrum. We thus seek a candidate with a strong background in numerical PDE. Prior experience with the finite element method, eigenvalue problems, wave propagation, quantum mechanics, and high performance computing are all desirable. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. There will be a generous allowance for travel, including to several meetings and conferences of the collaboration held in the US and abroad. The preferred starting date is late August 2023, or sooner, and the duration is two years, with a possibility of a third year depending on funding and performance.

Applications will be reviewed starting December 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Please contact Douglas Arnold (arnold@umn.edu) for any additional inquiries about the position.

Applicants should submit an AMS cover sheet, complete curriculum vitae, a description of their research and teaching, and at least three letters of recommendation to http://www.mathjobs.org. A cover letter relating the applicant's research goals and qualifications to the projects is highly recommended.

Any offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. The University of Minnesota is an Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer.
