Position Description
PhD position in Mathematical analysis of partial differential equations. JOB DESCRIPTION The Delft Institute for Applied Mathematics (DIAM) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) invites applications for a full-time PhD position in the field of mathematical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs). The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. H. Yoldaş. The research topics primarily revolves around PDEs stemming from structured population dynamics and kinetic theory. Examples of such equations include growth-fragmentation equations, run and tumble equations that model bacterial movement, and classical kinetic equations in gas theory, including the Boltzmann equation. As a PhD student in this position, you will investigate the qualitative and quantitative aspects of these PDEs employing a diverse range of mathematical tools from PDE theory, functional analysis and probability theory. The specific research direction will be tailored to your background and interests, potentially encompassing topics such as well-posedness, long-term behavior analysis of PDEs, deriving PDEs from particle systems, and numerical analysis. The appointment is for a duration of 48 months. The earliest starting date is December 1, 2023. The salary is determined according to pay scale P (promovendus) of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. The successful candidate will focus on carrying out mathematical research. A light teaching load comes with the position. The communication will be in English. PhD students are enrolled in two graduate schools (one of the faculty and one of the entire university) offering courses for transferable (social) skills, discipline related skills, and research skills. REQUIREMENTS The candidate should: - Hold a master's degree in mathematics or a closely related discipline, - Have a profound knowledge on the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations (and preferably probability theory) as well through training offered by respective courses, - Have eagerness to explore complex mathematical challenges, - Have excellent proficiency in English both written and spoken, - Be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year.
