 SUSTech Statistics and Data Science Global Scholars Forum 2024

The Statistics and Data Science Global Scholars Forum, hosted by the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), is designed to serve as a dynamic platform for eminent scholars from around the world in Statistics and Data Science to engage with cutting-edge international issues and foster cross-disciplinary academic innovation. The Forum seeks to attract exceptional researchers who are aligned with our commitment to building a department recognized globally for excellence in statistics and data science.

6.Qualifications and Benefits

1. Qualifications

Outstanding Faculty (Chair Professor / Professor)

Candidate of national-level talent programs, tenured professor or associate professor of overseas well-known universities or research institutions, leading talent with internationally recognized achievements.

Young Faculty (Associate / Assistant professor)

Doctoral degree obtained from renowned universities and institutes; and have more than 36 months of overseas work experience, with a formal teaching or research position in overseas universities and research institutes.

2. Support Policies

Research startup funds: A maximum of CNY 4 million in research funding is provided by the local government and the university within five years. Alternatively, it can be discussed case by case.

3. Remuneration

Salary: Globally competitive salary (one of the best in the sector); Preferential policy of individual income tax, income tax of qualified high-level talents will be compensated by local government to a maximum of 15% for qualified candidates.

Insurances: Shenzhen’s highest level of retirement insurance, medical insurance, unemployment insurance, industrial injury insurance, maternity insurance, and housing provident funds. And provide commercial supplementary medical insurance and high-level commercial medical insurance.

Subsidy: The university will assist in applying for the corresponding talent programs according to the national, provincial, and municipal talent policies. Successful personnel will receive the relevant program funding/reward.

Housing: Temporary on-campus apartments provided or subsidies to support off-campus rental housing.

Other benefits: Permanent residence or resident visa service for scholars and family (spouse and children); Service of children’s education in SUSTech-affiliated preschool, primary school, and middle school.

Introduction of Department of Statistics and Data Science

Established in April 2019, the Department of Statistics and Data Science aims to institute a world-class learning and research center. The department is committed to cultivating top-notch talents’ proactive thoughts, innovative thinking, and global vision, as well as their core skills in scientific methodologies. The department now offers two undergraduate programs: a major in Statistics and a major in Data Science and Big Data Technology. The department also offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Probability and Statistics. Our faculty members' key specialized research areas include Mathematical Statistics, Biostatistics, Financial Statistics, and Data Science.

There are currently 220 undergraduate students, 39 M.Phil. students, and 38 Ph.D. students. As the department grows in size and strength, the number of graduate students is expected to rise substantially from the current level.

We currently have 17 full-time and four jointly appointed faculty members, comprising 3 Chair Professors, 4 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, and 8 Assistant Professors. All faculty members of the department have extensive overseas study or work experiences, including an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, two winners of the prestigious State Natural Science Award (2nd class), two Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) Fellows, an IMS Council member, a Fellow of American Statistical Association, an IMS Medallion Lecturer, a Fellow of the Royal Statistics Society, a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

Thanks to the rich and quality resources of SUSTech, we have established the Center for Biostatistics and the Statistic Consulting Center. The Center for Financial Statistics and the Center for Data Science will also be in place in the future. By working with SUSTech Global, we provide high-quality and multi-type International Education Training and Development Plans for undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as opportunities to study in overseas universities. We are committed to enhancing student’s social vision and well-rounded thinking.
