Position Description

Assistant Professor of Practice

Department of Mathematics

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice, starting in August 2025 for a three-year contract. Responsibilities include overseeing instruction in introductory courses taught by graduate teaching assistants and mentoring the instructors. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach first and second-year undergraduate courses. Other responsibilities include professional development for graduate teaching assistants, updating introductory courses, and overseeing the use of technology in the Department’s instruction (such as WeBWorK). A competitive starting salary will be negotiated. UNL makes available reasonably priced life, health, and long-term disability insurance programs along with a faculty retirement plan which includes significant institutional contribution. To learn more about the department please visit https://math.unl.edu/.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in mathematics or a closely related field or anticipate receiving their degree by August 2025. Preference will be given to candidates who have strong teaching and mentoring skills and are adept at overseeing lower-level courses taught by graduate teaching assistants. It is also desirable to have an interest in teaching pedagogy for graduate teaching assistants and in overseeing the use of technology in the Department’s instruction (such as WeBWorK). The successful candidate will also have a commitment to an inclusive environment and working with diverse communities.

Application Process

Review of applications will begin October 21, 2024, and continue until a suitable candidate has been selected. Applicants should submit the following materials via www.mathjobs.org: a letter of application, a CV, a teaching statement (addressing aptitude for mentoring, managing teaching in lower-level courses, teaching pedagogy, and overseeing the use of technology, such as WeBWorK, in lower-level courses), and the names of at least three references who can address these aptitudes. Please arrange for your references to submit their letters using www.mathjobs.org.

Applicants must also complete the Faculty/Administrative information form at https://employment.unl.edu, requisition F_240127. Failure to submit applications to both www.mathjobs.org and https://employment.unl.edu will result in an incomplete application and cannot be reviewed.
