POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking applied mathematicians with expertise in machine learning/artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Successful candidates are expected to develop productive research programs, mentor and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to direct Ph.D. dissertations in data science/computational science. Candidates with experience in industry and/or applied interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged to apply. Anticipated appointment date is fall 2025.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 27 tenured and tenure-track faculty members with strong expertise in the areas of algebra and combinatorics, fixed point theory, statistics, bioinformatics, computational science, topology, data science and applied mathematics. Notable accomplishments of the productive faculty include publication of high-impact peer-reviewed manuscripts and annual research expenditures of $1.5m. An exciting development for the Department is the establishment of a Data Science PhD program that started in 2021. The Department also contributes to interdisciplinary programs across the university including the Bioinformatics and Computational Science graduate programs in the College of Science. Lastly, UTEP is consistently ranked in the top ten by Diverse Issues in Higher Education for Mathematics and Statistics degrees conferred to Hispanic undergraduate and master’s students. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in statistical/mathematical data science or a related field, a strong record of research accomplishments and the capacity to secure extramural funding. Preference will be given to those with postdoctoral experience and those who can apply mathematical techniques in optimization and topology to ML and AI.
