Assistant Professor of Statistics and Data Science

Central Connecticut State University invites applications to join the Department of Mathematical Sciences as an Assistant Professor of Statistics and Data Science. The successful candidate will become part of a multi-faceted Department whose nearly thirty (30) full-time faculty members have a broad range of expertise in theoretical and applied mathematics, mathematics education, actuarial science, statistics, data science, and developmental mathematics. The position is full time beginning August 2025.

About CCSU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences
As part of the School of Engineering, Science, and Technology, the mission of the Mathematical Sciences Department is to prepare STEM majors for teaching, business, industry, and research, and to provide service to other majors due to the critical importance of mathematics and statistics in the university’s general education requirements. Faculty have numerous opportunities to engage with students outside the classroom through participation in clubs, colloquia, math competitions, research presentations, and other activities.
Out of the department’s full-time faculty members, nine are members of the Statistics and Data Science group, whose mission is to provide students with tools to apply of statistics, data science, and actuarial science to problems that arise in business, industry, and government. We have well-established programs in Statistics (undergraduate and graduate), Actuarial Science (undergraduate and graduate), and Data Science (graduate). We are also hoping to start an undergraduate program in Data Science in the near future. We are seeking a dynamic faculty member who has experience in both teaching and scholarship and who can teach courses in both the Statistics and Data Science programs.
Position Profile
This is a tenure-track faculty position with a course load of twelve (12) credits per semester, and an expectation of scholarship and service to the university and the profession. Applicant Evaluative Criteria
Applicant profiles and supplementary materials will be evaluated for appointment based on the following:
Education:
- All applicants must possess a Doctoral degree in statistics, data science, or a related field.
Experience and Training:
- Evidence of excellence in teaching statistics and/or data science classes.
- Evidence of research potential in statistics and/or data science.
Ideal Candidate
Preference will be given to applicants with the following:
- Evidence of excellence in teaching BOTH statistics and data science classes.
- Evidence of scholarly activity in statistics and/or data science, such as publishing a book, or publishing in an academic journal or academic conference proceeding.
- Demonstrated knowledge of text analytics.
- Demonstrated industry experience in statistics and/or data science.
- Demonstrated record of successful grant applications

Compensation and Employee Benefits
In accordance with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2024-2025.
