Position Description
Applied Mathematics, Postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematical Biology
Purdue
University welcomes applications for a research postdoctoral fellow in
the area of biological pattern formation and complex systems, within
Alexandria Volkening’s group (https://www.alexandriavolkening.com) in the Department of Mathematics (https://www.math.purdue.edu) and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering (https://engineering.purdue.edu/BME).
The
successful applicant will collaborate on one or more multidisciplinary
projects in the Volkening group; possible projects include (but are not
limited to) data-driven, vertex-based, or PDE modeling of pattern
formation for developmental-biology applications, such as skin-pattern
formation or plant growth. Projects may use biological data and
questions to motivate the development of topological techniques or
parameter-estimation methods for complex systems. Applicants with
experience in parameter estimation, equation learning, or mathematical
modeling are especially encouraged to apply. The postdoctoral fellow
will have the opportunity to co-mentor undergraduate researchers if they
 are interested.
The
position is intended for up to three years, with an initial appointment
of two years (possibility of third year depends on availability of
funding and performance). Funding is available to cover some moving
expenses and conference travel. Anticipated start date is August 2024,
but an earlier start date is also possible if the selected candidate
prefers this.
Applications
should consist of: cover letter; CV; research statement; statement on
teaching or mentoring; and three or more letters of recommendation. A
statement on diversity and inclusion is also encouraged. All of these
materials should be submitted on MathJobs, and application review will
begin December 5, 2023.
Questions are welcome — please contact Dr. Alexandria Volkening (avolkening@purdue.edu).
Purdue University is an EOE/AA employer. All individuals, including minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.
Application Materials Required:
