Position Description

An interesting opportunity is available for a fully funded PhD position in mathematical physics, focusing on the interplay between microlocal analysis and quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. The project investigates quantum fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, primarily with techniques from partial differential equations on manifolds.

Your job

You will work on quantization and renormalization problems for quantum fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter backgrounds with methods of microlocal analysis. A key goal of the project is to develop robust mathematical techniques for analyzing and computing physical quantities in the generic absence of symmetries. You will be embedded in the Utrecht Geometry Centre within the Mathematical Institute, a vibrant research hub with many activities such as seminars, working groups, and conferences. You will participate in the activities of our research team of PhD candidates and postdocs and engage in interdisciplinary interactions as well as undergraduate teaching.

Your qualities

- We welcome applicants with a Master’s degree in mathematics, who meet the following qualifications:

- You have a strong background on partial differential equations on manifolds, microlocal analysis, mathematical Quantum Field Theory or a closely related area.

- You are interested in applications in relativistic physics (an additional background in theoretical physics is very welcome).

- You have an aptitude for and willingness to assist with undergraduate tutorials.

- You have excellent English language and communication skills.

Our offer

- A position for 18 months, with an extension to a total of four years upon successful assessment in the first 18 months;

- a gross monthly salary between €2.901 and €3.707 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale P under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));

- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;

- a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University has a number of schemes and facilities of its own for employees. This includes schemes facilitating professional development, leave schemes and schemes for sports and cultural activities , as well as discounts on software and other IT products. We also offer access to additional employee benefits through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage our employees to continue to invest in their growth. About us

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major strategic themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Pathways to Sustainability. Sharing science, shaping tomorrow.

Working at the Faculty of Science means bringing together inspiring people across disciplines and with a variety of perspectives and backgrounds. The Faculty has six departments: Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information & Computing Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Together, we work on excellent research and inspiring education. We do so, driven by curiosity and supported by outstanding infrastructure. Visit us on LinkedIn and discover how you can become part of our community.

The Mathematical Institute is part of the department of Mathematics. We organise and teach the Bachelor's curricula in Mathematics as well as the (English-taught) Master's programme in Mathematics and some service teaching in mathematics. The Institute is internationally recognised for its research in both pure and applied mathematics. It houses the Utrecht Geometry Centre and maintains a long-standing tradition of transdisciplinary collaboration with other scientific fields including, among others, atmosphere/ocean sciences, computational life sciences, mathematical biology, mathematical economics, medical and seismic imaging, theoretical computer science, and theoretical physics. We participate in university focus areas in Complex Systems and Applied Data Science.
