Fellowship Description

The Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University invites applications for the Alan Mekler Postdoctoral Position starting September 1, 2026.
Applications from all research areas represented in the department are encouraged, but priority will be given to applications in the following areas:
  • Applied Analysis and Partial Differential Equations (contact: Razvan Fetecau and Weiran Sun);
  • Combinatorial Optimization (contact: Tamon Stephen);
  • Finite Fields and Cryptography (contact: Petr Lisonek);
  • Mathematical Biology, with a focus on modelling for ecology, evolution and/or epidemiology (contact: Ben Asby and Ailene MacPherson).
We seek applicants with a strong aptitude for research and interest in teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to an active, innovative department with strong research groups and a thoughtful teaching environment. The fellowship duration is one year, renewable for one additional year up to satisfactory performance in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be required to teach an average of one and a half undergraduate courses per year, so 3 courses over the expected duration (2 years) of the fellowship. 

Qualifications
Excellence in research and demonstrated potential teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate must: 
  • Hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related discipline, obtained no later than 3 years prior to the start of the fellowship.
  • Have an excellent scientific record of research in the areas of interest.
  • Demonstrated potential in their future research plans.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching undergraduate courses in Mathematics.

  • A cover letter (a maximum of 2 pages) that briefly addresses (1) the fit of the applicant with the listed priority research areas (indicate in boldface the areas of fit on the first page of the letter) and (2) the qualification criteria.
  • A complete, up-to-date curriculum vitae that lists the candidate’s education and employment history, publications, conference presentations, funding and awards, student supervision, collaborations and partnerships, teaching experience, and service activities if any.
  • A research statement (typically 2-4 pages) that describes the candidate’s research area and experience, and a two- year plan for their research program.
  • Two examples of published or submitted scholarly work.
  • A teaching statement (typically 2-3 pages) that describes the candidate’s teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Three reference letters by referees who can comment on your suitability for this position.

Salary and Benefits
